LA

it's been a while since i'd been back to l.a. after living there for about six yrs. (i hope i'm not in trouble with some of my l.a. friends when they read this....um...if i didn't call you, it's b/c i was only in town for like 37 hours. honest.) anyways...here are some things i saw... and didn't see...

things i saw in LA
  • road rage. two cars actually pulled over to fight on the highway. this was somewhere in the cali desert on the way to l.a. amazing. who would pull over?
  • a man picking scabs on his forehead. he was homeless at venice beach. not a bad place to be homeless i guess. he was also writing numbers down in this notepad he had. they didn't make much sense to me.
rembrandt's works. went to the getty museum for the first time. really pretty. i learned that rembrandt painted things to look more rough and unfinished. this contrasted with the uniform, clean look that artists of his day were into. the paintings were of christ and the apostles mainly. he made them look like people you could relate to. rather than these saints on church ceilings. we wondered if that's why he decided to paint all of them. he used a jewish man as a model for christ.

kira at ucla

kira trying to empty a package of pickle juice on the 405. most of it ended up on her passenger door window (she was emptying it out so i could eat the said pickle)(what a gf).

my friend josh (and his wife becca and daugher lucy). how good is it to see an old friend and feel like you can pick up right where you left off? they live in the only neighborhood in l.a. where there is some sort of community feel. trees too. it's nice.

  • kira dancing briefly
  • a billion apartments
  • a man peeing on the sidewalk. ok, i didn't see it. kira did. she saw what he was holding apparently too...
  • some cool short films. went to a film festival for a bit called hypefest. all of the shorts were really good. opened my eyes to different formats we could do at church.
  • kira with funny sunglasses on (they wouldn't let us take pictures).
  • my old boss. divita's pizza. on wilshire near federal in west l.a. great pizza. he didn't recognize me. so i messed with him. it has been 13 yrs.

things i DIDN'T see in LA
  • a lot of trees
  • the ucla bookstore. it didn't open til noon. c'mon!
  • many of my friends
  • kira body surfing. tho she did get in the water.
  • community
  • mosaic church/bel air presbyterian (my old church)
  • mickey mouse (next time)

any good pics from the trip taken by a person i gave the camera to...sidenote: i think i am going to start a site called "takeyourownpictures.com" i'd be curious to see the percentage of pictures you get taken by strangers you hand the camera to and ask for help. for me, i'd say about 25% of the pics that strangers take turn out. most people just take them too far away. or off center. or you name it. here is a pic a man took (bless his heart. he tried.) at the getty center. you'd think the most obvious thing to do was put us in the center of this arch we are under (i even asked him to)(he was about to take it without the arch). this is what we got.

at ucla. royce hall. um. that's kinda why we handed you the camera. to take a pic of us AT ROYCE HALL hello! :)

Even more pics from LA (ones that I took that are totally perfect) :)
