Jeff and Kira Live
So, Kira and I went to see one of the bands I've been into lately called West Indian Girl. During the night, there were a number of embarrassing moments. Let me note them for you:• When we arrived at The Sets (which I knew nothing about), I was a bit overdressed wearing jeans and a dress shirt. Cargo shorts and T's seemed to be the more appropriate attire. So, already, I'm looking like I'm trying too hard.
• Spending just a few moments there, it is evident as well that there is not going to be a big crowd. I had a feeling there might not be. The band is from L.A., and it was their first time in Phoenix. I was hoping as time went by that more folks would show up. No such luck. We walked into the music venue area of the club, and there were barricades, police tape, and about 12 people. Let me clarify that...10 people at the bar and 2 closer to the stage (there to hear music). Yes, Kira and I - at least at first - were the only ones there to see the band...and we were wearing the "I paid money to be here" bracelets. I think that's what the police tape was for...you could come in front of it if you paid to see the band.
• As the concert started, I felt soooo bad for the band. I mean, they drove all this way, this is their livelihood, and there were more people at my 40th bday party than there were at The Sets.
Then, go figure, West Indian Girl puts on an incredible show. They just rocked. They didn't seem to really hold back either, hitting some pretty high and powerful notes.
Then...
• I went to talk to Robert, the lead singer, and asked him what the name of the band meant..."Uh, I don't know, man..." "What do you mean you don't know? You're in the band," I said, "Who came up with the name then?" "Uh...me and the bass player," he said. Come to find out, West Indian Girl is the street name for a popular drug in the 60's. So, it was kind of like me asking him what "Mary Jane" means. Just call me "Jeff Vice".
• As I continue talking to Robert - who was an incredibly cool guy for someone who had to endure the show - I asked him about how many people that get on avg at their concerts. "Uh, we get some pretty big crowds in L.A. where we're from..." "Like how many," I ask. "I guess about 2,000." "Oh," I said. I suddenly became even more aware that there were less people there than our first service at New Valley. :)
Anyhoo, it was great fun. I highly recommend West Indian Girl. They're on iTunes and will have a new cd this fall. My fav songs from them...Miles from Monterey, Trip, Hollywood, What are You Afraid Of...
Oh, lastly...I forgot to take a pic with the band. So the only pic I have is this one...nice...kind of embarrassing... :)
